History: Sokka as I'll be playing him is not purely from Avatar, but is also a refugee from the now-dead LJ RPG Apharsites. For the first fifteen and a half years of his life, Sokka was a member of the Southern Water Tribe in the World of Four Nations. When he was very young, the Fire Nation raided his home and most of his tribe, including his mother, was killed off. Shortly after, all the men of the tribe left home to join the fight against the Fire Nation, leaving Sokka to be the "man of the tribe" at a very young age. He is fiercely protective of his younger sister, though she has become a very powerful Waterbender, and also of their friend Aang, though he recognizes that with the Avatar's powers, there's only so much he can really look out for the guy - and Katara's better at it anyway.
After finding Aang, things got a little more complicated. Katara wanted to follow and help and Sokka refused to stay behind if she was to go. The next few months were spent traveling the world, fighting The Good Fight, and generally being a pain in the Fire Nation's ass. Sokka himself found a very comfortable niche as The Idea Guy, finding in travel that what he really enjoyed was being an inventor and the plan-maker than the warrior he'd been assigned to when his father left.
And then-- things changed. Just after they'd won a major point in the Northern Tribe against the Fire Nation, Sokka turned a corner-- and ended up in what would eventually be called Apocalyptica. In the year that followed, many things changed for him, the most noticeably being his relationships. Fire Prince Zuko became a close friend, often called brother, and his wife and daughters (Melaka Fray, Hana and Loo) became his sister and nieces. His relationship with Katara became strained to the breaking point, though they have not quite been torn apart yet, they are certainly avoiding each other now more than ever before. Also, Sokka met A Girl, one Paige Guthrie who did one thing none of the other women in Sokka's life have done consistently: she went out to fight and she came back, again and again. And always to him.
A couple things that should be noted here: one of the major dangers in Apocalyptica was Mel's younger brother, Harth, an insane, manipulative vampire. His first act against his sister was against the person who he saw as taking his place - Sokka. Through trickery and just being a better fighter, Sokka was beaten near death and then left for Harth's accomplices, the parasitic Magog. If not for Mel and a few others from the township, he would have been infested and very painfully died. Sokka came back from this experience with a few things, the most notable being his scars - there is an H carved into his right temple, and an F carved into his left, as well as a vampire bite that is usually hidden by the bone necklace he wears - the much longer hair that he's grown out to take attention away from said scars, and a desire to be an inventor and a warrior both so he's never bested like that again.
Personality: Sokka is a Dork. No matter how accomplished he became (an engineer, a warrior), he is the sort of boy who would trip over his own feet, roll down a hill, fall in a heap and then jump up and take a bow in front of the onlookers before tearing away again. He is not very good at moping around, and when he does it, he takes very great care to make sure he is alone and that no one will be able to walk in on him. Sokka prefers laughing over crying, and if the latter must be done, then crying WHILE laughing is the next best choice.
He's fiercely protective of those he loves to no end. Despite, what seemed to him, Katara's glaring and obvious mistakes over and over again, he was the only one of the entire township that never completely gave up on her - even when he knew he probably should. Only recently, when the two of them had a chance to kill Harth once and for all and she convinced him not to, has Sokka refused to take the fall for Katara or to stick up for what she believes in. However, this protectiveness also covers Zuko, Mel, their daughters, his girlfriend Paige, and a variety of close friends. Katara was at the top of that last but-- that's debatable now. However, Sokka will tear after any of these people in a heartbeat if he believes they need help.
